G1A-6 Preview: Razor thin district should see another exciting team battle

BY BRANT PARSONS

Kabra Wrestling Rankings are updated every week all season long for Kabra+ members.

Last season: Viera outscored Kissimmee Osceola and Harmony as all three teams scored 191.5 points or more. Viera topped the Kowboys by 12.5 and Longhorns by 22.5.

How did Kabra do?: Our predicted champion finished second, our team to watch ended up third and the team we slotted to finish third, won.

Last year’s district tournament results

Last year’s region tournament results

Wrestlers to watch: Catalina Kenney (Viera), Elizabeth Pinto (Viera), Ryauna Nepomuceno (Viera), Rylee Beville (Cocoa Beach), Aniyah Whayne (Kissimmee Osceola), Savannah Nazario (Viera), Katelynn Holt (Harmony), Vanessa McCloud (Merritt Island), Kiley Vinson (Harmony).

The favorite: Viera. A state champion and placer are gone, but they still have a lot of talent in the room.

Team to watch: Harmony. The Longhorns are built for success and could see it here.

24-25 dual record: 7-0

Recent district results: 2025:1; 2024:1-1A13; 2023:7-1A13

Last state champion: Emma Hoppe, 2025 (135)

Notable losses (Graduation/Transfer): Emma Hoppe, 44-3, SC, RC, DC; Isabel Alvarez, 40-6, 4th, RC, DC.

Notable returning wrestlers: Catalina Kenney, Sr., 47-3, 4th, R2, DC; Elizabeth Pinto, So., 35-7, RQ-BR, DC; Olivia Gapud, Jr., 31-15, RQ-BR, D2; Savannah Nazario, Jr., 30-9, RQ, DC; Zahar Zouaki, Jr., 28-14, RQ, D2; Lillian Straessley, Sr., 27-12, RQ, D2; Malia Santos, Jr., 11-11, D6.

New wrestler: Ryauna Nepomuceno, Sr., 24-8, 8th, R3, D2 (Transfer from Rockledge)

What they are saying: “We're the biggest school in the county and very unique in terms of our geographic area. I think we need to understand that we're going to run our program the way we've been running it for the last four years. We're going to put the blinders back up as to what everybody else is doing, understanding that what we're doing from an entire program standpoint works and we'll continue to evolve it when we need to meet the needs and goals of our wrestlers.”

On Cat Kenney: “Here's a cool story. She took eighth as a freshman. She took sixth as a sophomore. She took fourth as a junior. I said, ‘We're not going second this year, kid.’ The goal is to win a state championship. Cat has worked on two things this summer. Physically, she has worked on her technique and her explosiveness and her finishing ability. She has also worked on her mental resilience, being able to overcome adversity. The true judge of your character is what do you do when the chips are against you. Do you rise to the occasion or do you fold and walk away? That's really what she's been working on. That’s the most sincere form of leadership. People will follow based on seeing her execute. Additionally, she's becoming more vocal. She doesn't need to yell at kids but she is being more vocal as to what she expects from our girls team. That's what we need in terms of leadership and she's embracing that. And I look forward she's going to have a heck of a year with the goal culminating in a state title this year. That is her goal.”

Fun fact: Kenney is looking to become the first Brevard County female wrestler to be a four-time state placer.

Outlook: Two of the three building blocks of this program have graduated in Hoppe and Alvarez, leaving Kenney to continue the legacy she’s been part of building.

It's a little less consistent than the boys, but I think if they're focused, I believe in my girls and I think they can make it very far.”

On Marijesus: “She's been consistent and we're looking for a big year for her. She was a first-year wrestler last year and she surprised us. She believed and she's been focused this offseason. I'm hoping that she gets to the next level and makes a deep state run.”
