3A-10 Preview: Wide-open race should make district tournament exciting

BY BRANT PARSONS

Kabra Wrestling Rankings are updated every week all season long for Kabra+ members.

Last season: Even though they had graduated a lot of seniors, Viera was able to repeat as district champions, topping Fort Pierce Central by 32 points.

How did Kabra do?: Do you know how hard it is to pick every spot wrong? We don’t know either, but we managed to do it in this district.

New wrestler: David Landin

What they are saying: “We're very excited. There's a lot of kids who have really put in a ton of effort the last two to two and a half years. Truth be told, the entire team that we have right now, I think there's a couple kids that maybe came out as a freshman and got some experience. This would have been when I wasn't there. But outside of that, no one has wrestled more than really three years on this team. We are senior heavy and ultimately, that story is going to be up to them, how they perform when it really matters. They're great kids. It's a really fun bunch of kids and a really great group to coach. We're really excited about them.”

On leadership: “There's a couple kids already that step up and they're the vocal guys, which is great, and you need that on every team. But you need other kids to lead in different ways, too. What that looks like changes month by month, week by week almost. There are days where you just need that one kid to say, ‘Hey, this is what we're doing today, guys.’ Then you need the couple kids that are leading by just they're staying after practice. They're putting on the extra weight in the weight room. They're doing the conditioning, whether we're doing track work or speed work. They're giving it a little extra go.”

On Brian Battles: “He got eighth in the state last year. He came back on the consolation side and got eighth in what was really his first full season and he's put together a heck of an offseason. He's a workhorse, he's a tough kid. he's a great young man, he's very coachable, and we're excited about him.”

Outlook: Year three for Smorin promises more growth and success for the Tigers.

What they are saying: “Amongst the starters coming into this year, we won't have one state qualifier in the group. We'll have 10 new starters of 14 weights. But of those, there are kids that have been in our system for one and even two years because the team has been pretty good the last couple years. They haven't had an opportunity to really get a ton of varsity time. They wrestled a lot JV and some spot duty varsity wise. I think it's a retool, right?”

On the excitement of youth: “I think that our season on the boy side it's going to lie within how quickly the boys are able to assimilate themselves to the increase in pace and aggressiveness that comes with varsity wrestling rather than JV. I think we'll rise to the occasion. It's going to be a fun year. I haven't been this excited about a year since our second year coaching, which is kind of crazy considering we're the back-to-back district champs.”

On comparing teams to last year: “Sometimes when expectations are heightened, it creates stress and stress, with expectations, it's pressure, and a lot of times you force things. I think last year, winning both at districts and district IBT championship, we did it with almost a hodgepodge group of kids that really had never started, that were seniors. We had three kids last year that were seniors that never started and all three were starters, I think this year the boys that are around have put in work all summer long. All they've done this summer is wrestle in our room and lift weights waiting for an opportunity. That's what makes it exciting because they're excited too. You kind of feed off of that.”

Outlook: Viera graduated a legendary senior class last season but the cupboard is not bare. Watch for this team to grow and develop as the season grows.

What they are saying: “ I only have five returners and the rest are all like freshman, sophomore, first year wrestlers. I'm just going back to straight basics. That's why I tell all the coaches I'm just starting fresh. I don't know if that's a good thing but I'm just changing mindsets of the kids. This year's a new year. We need to change everything we did from last year to this year and get more wins. Do I wish I had some my seniors back? Yes. But at the same time, I'm, getting these new kids coming in and hopefully they start improving towards the end of the season.”

On working with the football team: “I’m trying to get some football kids in. They've always helped out. I've never really asked, even when I was an assistant coach so when I asked they had a couple kids if they wanted to stick it out, they were there. This year it seems like I guess I'm little getting a little bit more recognized with other sports here in Vero. It's actually looking really good.”

On looking for growth: “With some of them having a full summer, I hope I'm seeing improvement, lots of improvement on those kids that came back.I'm able to get in the wrestling room and condition with the kids. So I expect a lot more improvement on that with them too on the condition side. This year I'm expecting more because we were able to put in more.”

Outlook: Vero is a little younger this season but that gives Villalpando a chance to start with the basics and mold this program into his vision.
