1A-6 Preview: Wide open district race should make for fun finish to season

BY BRANT PARSONS

Kabra Wrestling Rankings are updated every week all season long for Kabra+ members.

Last season: Weeki Wachee and Hernando battled it out in the district tourney with the Hornets coming out on top to win their third-consecutive IBT crown.

How did Kabra do?: We picked 1-2 correctly as we saw Weeki Wachee having the edge in returners. In fact, we correctly predicted spots 1-6 in this district race.

Notable losses (Graduation/Transfer): Jonathan Clohecy, 56-0, SC, RC, DC; Jonathan Overstreet, 29-22, RQ, D2; Aaron Spratt, 40-15, RQ, D4; Brock Merrill, 20-23; Jesse Nelson, 20-13; David Mooney, Jr., 37-16, RQ-BR, D2 (Transfer to Tennessee).

What they are saying: “Our goal is to develop our young core of wrestlers while continuing to develop our culture and grow our program. We're still fairly young. We've got a large group of sophomores that were first year wrestlers last year and they put in a good amount of training this summer and we've made a lot of progress.”

On Devinn Dunn: “He'll be a senior this year and he's always been a really tough kid. He's been in some tough weight classes last year. He wrestled 126 and our region was pretty loaded there for that weight and he's put in really good off season. He's competed a bunch, gone to a couple different tournaments, and he's someone that is going to be a leader of our team, and we're really looking forward to seeing him take some steps forward on the mat this year and finally closing finally getting through the door and getting to the state tournament. He's someone that I think can do that.”

On building the schedule this year: “It's definitely a challenge when you're building a schedule, because you don't want to shy away from any competition by any means, but at the same time, you don't want to burn kids by jumping in too far. So, yeah, we've got some challenges planned and I think this group is ready for it and I think this group can handle it and it'll make them better wrestlers in the long run.”

Outlook: The Buffalo will field a very young team this year but there is potential in the room.

Mount Dora Hurricanes (NR, #19)

Coach: David Kemmy (5th season, 40th overall)

Assistant coaches: Chris Navarro, Bob Gruner

24-25 dual record: 9-5

Recent district results: 2025:5; 2024:2; 2023:2; 2022:1.

Notable losses (Graduation/Transfer): Brayden Brown, 23-11, D5; Lord Cruz, 16-12, D5; Connor Berry, 19-9, D6.

Notable returning wrestlers: Cannon Sommer, Jr., 22-10, SQ, R4, D2; Colton Fickett, Sr., 37-11, RQ-BR, D2; Kollen Staab, Sr., 11-12, RQ, D4; Henry Vasquez, Jr., 17-17, RQ, D4; Brody Jeckovich, Jr., 18-18, RQ, D4; Kaleb Olson, Jr., 13-17, RQ, D4; Tyger Morris, Jr., 15-21, RQ, D4; Damian Quinonez, So., 31-11, D5.

What they are saying: “I think the team wants to bounce back very much so. A good number of them have been working out in the off season and I think they are fully aware that they were part of the worst season in our four-year history. While last year was a disappointment, I think many of them learned a lot. We had some injuries that really hurt us. but that's what happens. And, I think they have the right mindset heading into this year for sure.”

On the growth of this team: “I think a lot of them took ownership for what happened last year. Some of it was illness and some injury. Illness is something that they can work to avoid. Eating right, getting plenty of sleep, things like that. I think a number of them realized that last year that maybe they should start listening to what we're telling them. I think this is the most veteran team we have at this point of the season. We have 23 or 24 guys back from last year. We did lose six seniors, four of which were starters, and we're probably only going to start two seniors this year. But it's a good group. They do really well together. A lot of them have bonded together over different things. A bunch of them took a trip to Rhode Island in June, wrestled in a tournament there stayed in homes of families. It was a good trip in a lot of ways, team bonding especially.”

On coaching 40 years: “My mantra has always been everything we do is designed to make you a better person, and make you a better wrestler. You may not agree with it, you may not like it, but that's where we start and end with everything that we do. and a lot of kids, they certainly have bought into it over the years and we've been, pretty successful whether at the college level or the high school level. I have kids I coached 35 or so years ago who still reach out to me. I'm in constant contact with hundreds of them thankfully through social media and that's what makes it special.”

Outlook: After a disappointing season, the Hurricanes return a deep roster with some talented upperclassmen working to bring the younger guys up to speed. Look for a bounce back season for Mount Dora.

What they are saying: “This year’s team is still very young, but full of potential and energy. While we’re in the early stages, we’re steadily growing, learning from each other, and building the foundation for a strong, cohesive team.”

On goals: “This year, our focus will be on building stronger team cohesion, continuing our growth on the learning path, and concentrating on wrestling our own match — striving to improve individually while lifting each other up as a team.”

On the program: “The program prioritizes personal development as much as competitive performance, teaching life skills such as resilience, discipline, and teamwork. Young athletes are encouraged to wrestle their own match, take ownership of their growth, and uphold the values of sportsmanship, integrity, and commitment. The coaching staff fosters a tight-knit, supportive environment, where every challenge is a chance to improve and every success is celebrated collectively.”

Outlook: The program is still regrouping and this will be another season with some young wrestlers looking to become better at the sport.
