2A-4 Preview: NSB and Winter Springs poised to battle for district supremacy again
Kabra Wrestling Rankings are updated every week all season long for Kabra+ members.
Last season: New Smyrna Beach had a huge season, winning the IBT district title and then had two wrestlers finish on top of the podium in Kissimmee. Jonathan Bruner and Kyle Nilsson were the first state champions for the school since 1998 as the Barracudas finished seventh in the state.
How did Kabra do?: We picked Winter Springs to win and said that New Smyrna Beach should make a run at the top. The Bears did win the district duals title, but Kabra came up short on seeing just how great a season that NSB would have.

Notable returning wrestlers: Jacob Rodriguez, Sr., 42-9, 4th, R3, DC; Rudley Villareal, So., 36-18, SQ, R2, DC; Cayden Torres, So., 39-13, SQ, R3, D3; Tyson Horel, Sr., 23-15, RQ-BR, DC; Ayden Keys, Sr., 29-17, RQ-BR, D2; Marco Gonzalez, Sr., 26-17, RQ, D2; Jacob Rivera.
What they are saying: “The goals are kind of as they always are. We want to get back to that state tournament for the dual series. I think we're all comparable teams. I think we have nine guys that are pretty tough and going to make a statement here. But, for me it's going to be the other five guys, that's in our lineup. What can they bring to the table? How much are they going to grow as the year goes on and contribute to the team? So we want to get back to the dual state series and then our goal is always that a top five finish. It's difficult to win a state title and I get that as a team IBT wise. 2A is no joke as far as depth, but if you finish top five, that's a pretty good accomplishment I believe.”
On Jacob Rodriguez: “The last two years he was undersized for 190 and this year we kind of made a full commitment to 175. Our goal is the state championship, win the state championship and that's it. He's putting the time in.”
On Rudley Villareal: “He's going to surprise the hell out of a lot of people. He was only a freshman and he just started wrestling in eighth grade. He had the MMA kind of background and you just see it the time that he's put in.”
Outlook: The Bears took a step back in the district last season and will look to move back to the top this year. They graduated four region qualifiers but have a solid core group back led by some strong seniors. If they can find some capable guys to fill a couple spots, they will be among the best in 2A again.

Outlook: A big group of experienced wrestlers are back for the Yellow Jackets this season and they’ll now look to send some to Kissimmee.

Notable returning wrestlers: Jackson Marchman, Jr., 29-9, RQ-BR, D3; Jacob Gibson, So., 20-13, RQ, D3; Terry Marchman, So., 20-14, RQ, D3.
New wrestlers: Landon Blackburn
What they are saying: “We are young but solid. Both boys and girls are working hard.”
On having a younger team: “ The nice thing is because I started the program here 20 years ago, from day one, I was able to establish my expectations. It's a very similar process now having a young team and having young guys that they have bought in already. They know what our goals are and they're all in. Obviously we're going to be young and we're going to make some mistakes, but they're scrappy, they get after it. I think the next year or two we're going to see some things move forward and get back to where Matanzas was.”
On coming back to coaching: “There were a couple things going on. Obviously, my daughter was wrestling in college, up there at Missouri Baptist and she competed up there for three years, but now she's in nursing school and she’s back home. I took some time off so I could travel, watch her wrestle and all that. Things then fell in place when they needed to get somebody back in here and get things stable. It was the right time.”
Outlook: White is back coaching after three years off and leads a Matanzas team that will won’t have a senior on the team.
