Last season: The state champions won the district with 223 points and their nine wrestlers all had perfect performances, going nine-for-nine for individual champions.

How did Kabra do?: It wasn’t a stretch, but we did have Flagler Palm Coast picked to win.

Notable returning wrestlers: Hadassa Manjano Herrera, So., 25-9, SQ, R4, D2; Kamdyn Powell, So., 5-17, RQ-BR, D4; Natalia Sanchez, Jr., 27-9, RQ, D2; Jocelyn Quiroz, Jr., 30-10, RQ, D2; Ava Hodge, Sr., 16-5, RQ, D2; Andrea Sotomayor, Jr., 19-17, RQ, D4; Danielle Laurent, Sr., 13-17, RQ, D6; Scarlett Huaman, Jr.

What they are saying: “We have about five girls that have been consistently wrestling since the end of the last year and that's probably one of the first times we did. They're starting to see the success and they're all right around each other so they make each other better at practice every day.”

More on this group: “They all were region qualifiers but now they put in that time. We're looking forward to seeing what they can do making it to state tournament. We have not had a female state placer yet. So I keep reminding them of that.”

Outlook: The Bears’ core has been working and competing all offseason and started to see some big returns with Herrera and Huaman having big Super 32 Early Entry performances. Look for more than just a single state placer in this group.

Recent district results: 2025:3; 2024:6; 2023:2; 2022:5

Notable losses (Graduation/Transfer): Delaney Graves, 26-5, SQ, R3, D2.

Notable returning wrestlers: Shyann Tate, Sr., 9-2, SQ, RC, DC; Hailey Mitchell, Sr., 16-13, SQ, R4, D4; Claudia La Costa Perez, Jr., 34-9, RQ-BR, DC; Mia Pina, Jr., 2-3, RQ, D2; Haylee Richards, Jr., 21-8, RQ, D2; Jayden Brouse.

What they are saying: “I think we got a great foundation with the girls that we have returning. The nice thing is they're making it fun with each other. The girls all get along really well, which that goes a long way. With us having so many new kids, it's a good impression to make and it's really nice to talk to kids when I'm out there recruiting trying to get kids from the school into the program and I can tell especially girls because it's intimidating for anyone but especially a girl that has a 300 pound man approaching her saying hey you should come wrestle when I can seriously say to them and honestly say to them hey we have really good kids. You're not going to be treated poorly here, so that's kind of the more important foundation is that the environment that those girls have created.”

On team pushing each other: “We had about half of the new girls wrestling at some summer tournaments and getting their first matches. And offseason wrestling is going to be good kids that you're going to face a couple new kids here and there, but they're cheering each other on, picking each other up. Especially with those new kids, that's a big pick-me-up.”

Outlook:

Hagerty Huskies

Coach: Paul Cuozzo (6th season)

Assistant coach: Jada Llamido

Recent district results: 2025:9; 2024:1; 2023:5; 2022:4

Notable losses (Graduation/Transfer): Jenna Manieri, 6-12, D5; Sophia Sciulli, 2-7, D6.

Notable returning wrestlers: Destiny Bass-Boston, Sr., 16-7, RQ-BR, D2; Itzel Gerena, Jr., 11-11, RQ, D4; Eva Kavaja, Sr., 11-7, D5.

New wrestlers: Laura Vasquez, Fr.; Lila Stanton, Fr.; Nia Thomas, Fr.; Kayla Rrapi, Sr.; Gabrielle Cervantes, Sr.

What they are saying: “We have a young team with a few leaders that have unfinished business. They have been working hard this summer to get 100% healthy and bring along the younger athletes so we can hit the ground running. The girls are a tight group and go above and beyond they have established a focus this year on making the room better so in return everyone is pushed to higher levels on and off the mat.”

On getting used to the sport: “It's tough because of the fact that they walk in the door self-conscious as it is. It’s brand new, the immediate reaction is I got to wear a singlet. I'm wrestling with boys and the whole nine. That’s why we try to split practices up so that we're staggering varsity and JV and then the girls. They get some facetime with the boys, but in the beginning, I like to separate them just so they can get used to each other. But the biggest thing I want to say is the girls are like family. I can tell those if they're going to be with me for, two years, whenever they join by the grouping and how they act around each other when they're taking care of each other throughout the tournaments and at practices. I could tell they form bonds pretty quickly and then the self-conscious crap goes away.”

Outlook: The Huskies have been retooling the girls team and this year should continue to see growth, especially with leaders Bass-Boston, Gerena, and Kavaja.

Matanzas Pirates

Coach: John White (17th season)

Assistant coach: Riley White

Recent district results: 2025:5; 2024:1-1A3; 2023:1-1A3; 2022:1-1A3

Last state champion: Mariah Mills, 2024 (110)

Notable losses (Graduation/Transfer): Ani Brown, 22-7, SQ, R2, DC.

Notable returning wrestler: R’Cardenay Michel, Sr., 19-7, R3, DC; Briana Durry, Jr., 12-9, SQ, R4, D2; Mai’kayla Jeffers, So., 4-9, D5.

What they are saying: “I'm excited to be able to go out there and put, close to 14 girls on the mat. and they're already in there working hard. And just like the boys team, they're young. I have one senior on the girls side. So I got about 10 freshman girls in there.”

On Brianna Durry: “Last year was her first year, but she had a great year and really picked up on some things. She was really basic last year and stayed within what made her comfortable. But now this year, she's already been in there. We're adding a whole bunch of stuff. So, I expect to see, her conditioning. She knows what to do now to get on that podium.”

Outlook: White has already increased the numbers in the room and this group will be lead by Michel and Durry.

Notable returning wrestlers: Emma Quick, Jr., 15-13, RQ-BR, D3; Yazmen Smith, Jr., 7-11, D5; Soroya Calderon, Jr.

On Emma Quick: “I'm excited to see what growth she can make. Her first year she had an injury. Last year she made it to regions and I fell a little short. I’m excited to see what growth she's going to make this season and try to make that leap.”

On Grace Lashinsky’s legacy: “She hated it at first but she came to love the sport on her own, not through kind of being forced to train. And once she fell in love with it, she became the epitome of hard work. Just in training, she would get mad if her partners goofed off. She would get mad if her partners weren't giving it a outside of training. She's lifting on her own. She's running on her own. She's watching wrestling. She was just always involved, always trying to make sure that if she has a goal, she accomplishes it. And that kind of mentality, I'm hoping carries over to some of them now that she's gone. Some of them kept up while she was here, but hoping they don't switch after she's left. Hoping they keep that mentality of keeping each other accountable in practice when someone's getting a little lazy or goofing off. And outside of training, making sure that they're doing what they need to also push themselves.”

Outlook: The state champion is gone but there are girls here looking to continue the legacy that Grace Lashinsky built here.

Notable returning wrestlers: Brielisse Melendez, Jr., 14-20, RQ, D2; Jayloni Winder, Jr., 18-18, RQ, D4.

What they are saying: “When we were going through the process of getting girls sanctioned, I was at every one of those meetings and to see not just here at University High School, but on a state level. And to see where it is now. Me and my wife went to a tournament at Lake Mary High School this year, a girls tournament. And on the way home, my wife got choked up, just the girl power movement, so to speak. I mean, it really does. It makes my heart happy knowing that the girls have this opportunity.”
