1A-10 Preview: Two teams look to break district title slumps in competitive district

BY BRANT PARSONS

Kabra Wrestling Rankings are updated every week all season long for Kabra+ members.

Last season: Robinson advanced 13 wrestlers to the region tournament and easily won the district crown.

How did Kabra do?: We correctly predicted the deep Robinson side to power the Knights to their first district crown since 2017, but we definitely missed the rise of Berkeley Prep to comfortably take second.

Last year’s district tournament results

Last year’s region tournament results

Wrestlers to watch: Noah Leota (SLAM Tampa), Viktor Swain (CCC), Arron McCarty (Robinson), Jason Schiavello (CCC), Koleton Washington (Chamberlain), Nathanael Lovelace (Berkeley Prep).

The favorite: Berkeley Prep. They could return nine of ten starters from their district runner-up team.

Team to watch: Jefferson. The depth that has been building can payoff this season.

District duals: Wednesday, January 7 at Berkeley Prep

District IBT: Wednesday, February 18 at Robinson

Berkeley Prep Buccaneers

Coach: Jeremy Carter (4th at school, 9th as head coach, 18th total)

Notable losses (Graduation/Transfer): Isfan Khodiev, 32-10, RQ, DC.

Notable returning wrestlers: Nathanael Lovelace, Sr., 34-11, SQ, R2, DC; Collyn Mihelic, 8th, 25-22, RQ-BR, D2; Faris Ali, Jr., 19-11, RQ-BR, D2; Vishnu Ashwath, Sr., 28-26, RQ, D3; Austin Marcus, 8th, 17-20, RQ, D4; Tyler Aidman, Jr., 15-23, RQ, D4; Cort Griffin, Jr., 8-11, RQ, D4; MJ Samuel, 8th; Mikey Masi, 8th; Rohan Patel, 8th.

What they are saying: “Half of them are young, talented, and hungry. The other half of them are veterans who have trusted me and the process for a few years now and are ready for their pay off seasons. All extremely hard working, tough, and bought into the culture. Each new year has been the next step for this program in the building of something very special. And just like last year; we're just getting started.”

On this group: “A lot of our guys spent their entire summer on the mat; both practicing and competing. You'll know which ones in March.”

Outlook: The Buccaneers look loaded and prepped to win their first district title since 2022.

On duals: “We're participating in the dual state tournament for the first time. We're hoping to show up and show out for our duals this year.”

On the team strengths: “Our varsity line up is shaping up to be a murderer's row of wrestlers starting from middle weight up to heavyweight. It's one experienced wrestler after another from 150 upwards with some talent spotted around the lower weights.”
