2A-6 Preview: Loaded Jesuit squad chasing state supremacy again

BY BRANT PARSONS

Kabra Wrestling Rankings are updated every week all season long for Kabra+ members.

Last season: Jesuit won this district with one of the biggest point differentials we’ve seen, outscoring the runners-up by 203 points. The Tigers won the Class 2A state duals title and finished second in the IBT.

How did Kabra do?: We correctly picked the big favorite to win. As for the rest of our predictions, they were challenged.

Last year’s district tournament results

Last year’s region tournament results

Wrestlers to watch: Reid Yakes (Tampa Jesuit), Mason Basile (Tampa Jesuit), Kawayran Vazquez (Tampa Jesuit), Zachary Leto (Tampa Jesuit), Brock Glover (Tampa Jesuit), Andrew Bray (Zephyrhills), Caden Krsul (Tampa Jesuit), Rylan Redfield (WC Cypress Creek), David Krambule (Pasco), Cooper Garcia (Tampa Jesuit), Anthony Rametta (Tampa Jesuit).

The favorite: Tampa Jesuit. One of the top teams in the state could return four state placers and large percentage of their line-up from a year ago.

Team to watch: Zephyrhills. There is a willingness to grind in this room and have five region qualifiers back to lead the group.

District duals: Wednesday, January 7 at Tampa Jesuit

District IBT: Saturday, February 21 at Tampa Jesuit, 10 a.m.

What they are saying: “ It should be a fun year. This is my first significant group that started with me as freshman and they're a really good group of kids.”

On Raul Ugarte: “He's the one that stands out the most. He's one of the most naturally gifted kids I think I've ever coached. Things come easy for him. He's probably had a 75% or above record since his freshman year. There's no reason why Raul shouldn't be on the podium if he's willing to really put the work in. There's no reason. The kid's so talented.”

More on this group: “They get along so well. They don't bang as hard in practice as I would like because it's their friend so they don't want to beat up on each other as much as I think. That's something that I'll pull the senior group aside at the beginning of the year and just ask them what their expectations are then let them know what mine are.”

Outlook: This is one of the more experienced groups that Patrick has had at Leto and they’ll look to finish their ride at Leto with a successful final year.
