2A-3 Preview: Clay and Ponte Vedra really to battle again for title

Kabra Wrestling Rankings are updated every week all season long for Kabra+ members.

Last season: Clay and Ponte Vedra battled for the district title with the Blue Devils prevailing with their first title since 2022.

How did Kabra do?: We suggested that it could be Clay’s best duals team in a while and they won the region duals title.

Wrestlers to watch: Landon Martin (Clay), Talan Babin (Ponte Vedra), Drew Holmquist (Clay), Michael Aker (Ponte Vedra), Daniel De Almeida (Ponte Vedra), Calvyn St. Clair (Clay), Zion Longmire (Fleming Island), Terrion Butler (Orange Park).

The favorite: Clay. With potentially nine region qualifiers back in the line-up, the Blue Devils look the part of the favorites, even after graduated three state placers.

Team to watch: Fleming Island. After a tumultuous season, there’s a new head coach in charge and he’s started the work on building this program up again.

District duals: Wednesday, January 7 at Clay, 1:30 p.m.

District IBT: Wednesday, February 18 at Clay, 1:30 p.m.

Outlook: The Blue Devils have a mix of returners, transfers, and youth to keep pushing this program higher.

What they are saying: "Our goal is the same as always. Starting off young, we're just trying to get better. Our goals are definitely wanting to win the conference title and district title for sure. First things first, to move our way up to regional and long-term goals."

On team leadership: "We have great team captains, those guys are always, training and wanting to get better. they really hold the standard over there on the mat anyway."

On guys to watch: "We have Evan Jacobs. He's one of our seniors who got hurt last year our team started real injury kind of plagued us throughout. He's missed weight last time too before at district. He tried to come back last year, it was a bad season for him. And then, Marcus Bradley, he's another one who got injured during winter practice. I was real hurt about that. I've had him around a long time. One of my first kids I've had since he was a freshman."

Fun fact: The wrestling team has the highest GPA among athletes at Ed White.

Outlook: The Commanders are a young team that is looking to build up numbers and experience.

Westside Wolverines

Coach: Chris McNealy (12th at school/30th overall)
