2A-2 Preview: Middleburg locked in for title defense, more trophies this season
BY BRANT PARSONS — Middleburg had been building each year under head coach Coll Robertson the past four years, but they just couldn’t put it all together for a big trophy.
That chase ended in fireworks last year as the Broncos took home the district double. The IBT district crown was the school’s first since 2016 and the duals title was the first one in program history.
“Everybody's bought in and we don't want to be a middle of the pack team anymore,” Robertson said. “We had the leadership last year with Wyatt Leduc who had been kind of a staple in the program since his freshman year. The kids rallied around him and kind of followed by his example and so when you got a guy like that on the team, it's real easy to get kids to flock to him and adopt the same mindset.”
Having accomplished those goals, the Broncos enter the 2025-26 season with a goal to not just repeat, but to grow on its success.
“Winning the district title is what I wanted the standard to be and they should be expected if everybody does what they're supposed to,” Robertson said. “Now let's go get a region dual and region IBT title. Let's try and push our way into the state semis and maybe even state duals finals and then once we get to the state IBT tournament, let’s get over the hump of being in the state semis.”
Middleburg has had five wrestlers reach the state semifinals in the past two season and they are looking to get that breakthrough to the finals this season.
“Hopefully they have the motivation they need to maybe do better than they they can,” Robertson said. “And prove Kabra wrong again.”
It should take another big effort with Lincoln against poised to battle them for the top spot.
The Trojans strength this year should be the collective group of wrestlers and their experience.
“It is a little strange for us the first time not having anybody that we know yet that is a guaranteed killer,” Lincoln coach Mike Crowder said. “Last year we came back with a state champion on the boys side, so we knew that we were good.”
Kabra Wrestling Rankings are updated every week all season long for Kabra+ members.
Last season: Middleburg advanced 10 wrestlers to the district finals and won the team title by 38.5 points. After beating Lincoln 48-25 in the region semifinals, the Broncos fell to Clay in the region final. Lincoln and Middleburg finished in the top ten in the state IBT with the Trojans placing ninth, seven points ahead of the Broncos.
How did Kabra do?: We picked Lincoln to win the district title and Kabra was proved wrong by Middleburg.

Middleburg earned a much-desired team district title last season.
Notable losses (Graduation/Transfer): Wyatt Leduc, 54-5, 3rd, RC, DC; Colt Daigle, So., 17-9 (Transfer to Clay)
Notable returning wrestlers: Nathan Harvey, Jr., 53-13, 3rd, RC, D2; Porter Loveland, Sr., 54-12, 3rd, R2, DC; Micah Thomas, Sr., 45-19, SQ, R3, DC; Sean Blouin, Sr., 43-21, SQ, R4, D2; Daniel Raines, Sr., 35-14, RQ-BR, DC; Jonathan Harp, So., 32-18, RQ-BR, D2; Terry Milam, So., 30-29, RQ-BR, D2; Christopher McKeel, Sr., 39-20, RQ, D2; Destin Watson, Jr., 23-27, RQ, D2; Keensdee Roseme, Sr., 23-17, RQ, D4; Gavin Fisher, Jr., 30-2.
New wrestlers: Joseph Sneed, Jr. (Transfer from Ridgeview); Astin Brewer; Logan Roberson.
What they are saying: “We have a big group of 11th/12th graders that all got 50+ matches this offseason. They’ve traveled to camps, clinics, and tournaments all summer to prepare for this season.”
On wrestlers to watch: “Nate Harvey, Gavin Fisher and Porter Loveland are all three coming back as former state placers and Sean Blouin coming back as a returning state qualifier. And three that have really impressed me this whole offseason have been Destinn Watson, Micah Thomas, and Terry Milam. Those three specifically have put together a hell of an offseason.”
On preparing for the big moments: “Our schedule this year especially is kind of set up to wrestle tough kids, tough tournaments and face the best guys as soon as we can. That way when we get to the semi-finals, it's going to be just another walk in the park. We’ve wrestled tough offseason, too, trying to hit all these national tournaments so these guys have seen tougher kids than they might see in the state semi. So the familiarity of being in that same position on Friday at the state tournament and then seeing tougher competition throughout the year and throughout the summer hopefully gets them prepared and they go into it calm, cool, collected and take care of business.”
Outlook: The defending district champions are looking to be better this season as expectations continue to grow each season for the Broncos. The team is deep across the board with wrestlers who can achieve big things at the state IBT and a duals team that won’t have many easy weight classes to face.

What they are saying: “We want to bring home team trophies. We want to place as many guys in these events as we can. For me, every week is more of what can I tinker with this week to help this kid get to the goals at the end of the year. One interesting thing about this group is that we have some seniors on the team that are unproven yet, but have been with us behind other people for a while. I'm actually excited to see how they shake out. Are they going to break out and show us something that they haven't been able to show yet because of where they've been in the lineup?”
On Juan Torres and Luke Rodriguez: “Luke ended up losing a wrestle off late last year to Juan Torres and it was the two out of three match. Every time it was a one-point match or it was overtime match. Juan qualified for state in one match and then Luke, end up in the tougher weight class and didn't qualify because he had to go up two weight classes which was you which made it a little bit harder too. So I'm really looking forward to both those guys just because I know they've been grinding all off season.”
On his assistants: “ Jake Burch and Reggie Toombs and the unbelievable amount of hours that they spend out of the season trying to help the kids get ready. These guys are just pouring their time in, all the time. And it's never even really a problem. It's more of like, hey, this is what I'm going to do, and it's nice for me to be able to allow them the freedom to do those kind of things and without me being in their ear non-stop, especially in the offseason. In the offseason, I like to let them work, because I think it helps them develop too in their style and their approach to what they do.”
