2A-15 Preview: A repeat might be on the table for high-flying Mavericks

BY BRANT PARSONS

Kabra Wrestling Rankings are updated every week all season long for Kabra+ members.

Last season: Archbishop McCarthy won its first district title since 2013, scoring 278 points and sending 11 wrestlers to the region tournament.

How did Kabra do?: We correctly picked the Mavericks to win the district title but we whiffed on seeing the big finish by American Heritage to earn a runner-up spot.

What they are saying: “We aim to defend our district titles, want to advance to the state dual series, and have several state placers and champs.”

On the makeup of this team: “We bring back Jacob Rhodess, a talented kid and solid sophomore. He's gonna be a surprise in the lineup. Gavin Calcines, who placed eighth for us last year, comes back. We have Atticus Dye who is going to add some strength and depth. Along with Deaven Montanez and Chris Smith, these are we have five kids who we had great freestyle and Greco season. They all made it to Fargo and were out there chasing competition in North Dakota. And we add three solid guys to the lineup and I'm really happy with those guys. I'm really excited to see the development of our returners. We're also working really hard to make sure that our transfers buy into the system to the academics here, which is a huge requirement and I'm looking forward to those kids too making contributions.”

On support: “I do have a group of parents that are willing to do what they need to do to support their kids and travel. We have a great administration here that supports us in our offseason endeavors and obviously as long as we prioritize the main thing, they are really supportive. Yes, being able to go out and chase the competition and use our competition as learning opportunities because that's what we like to do. We don't reinforce winning or losing, but getting better and they're buying into it.”

Outlook: Winning the district title last season was a springboard for the Mavericks into the summer and leading into this season. They’ll look to be even better this season.

Our priority this year is to build relationships with our middle school teachers to get support for our wrestling program, as a result we won’t be as competitive on a team standpoint but in the long run we expect to be competitive. With that being said we still have 5 or 6 wrestlers we expect to make a run at states and a couple of them to make it on the podium. Having middle schoolers in the room is an adjustment as a coach but we love the youthful energy they bring in the room.”

Outlook: The Panthers might take a step back this season as they work on building the middle school pipeline and get their youngsters some early experience.

On this program: “Our program is built on more than just wins and losses it’s about developing champions in life as well as on the mat. We emphasize discipline, accountability, and respect, teaching our athletes to carry themselves with integrity in every setting. Wrestling is demanding, but we believe that the toughness, focus, and perseverance built here will serve our wrestlers far beyond high school. We have a proud tradition, supportive families, and a coaching staff committed to pushing each athlete to reach their full potential.”

On Christopher Coleman: “He knows our goal is to win it all. that's the end goal for him and with some of these other guys who was regional qualifiers is to get to the big dance. He shows a lot of grit. I mean I have about six guys who plays football who also wrestle for me. So they know when it's time to run extra sprints after football practice when I show the football practice, we're going to run some extra sprints. They don't mind going the extra mile to be great at something they're doing and that's one thing I love and I appreciate about my boys. They're going the extra mile to be great at football and wrestling at the same time.”

On a Deerfield Beach wrestler: “You never know what you're going to get out of my kids. Looks could be very deceiving. I might not have the fastest kid, but some of my kids have big hearts and I tell them they're going to come out of this match banged up, bruised or beaten. It could be one of two things. My kid winning or my kid losing, but just know my kids going to have your kids banged up and bruised.”

Outlook: The foundation has been laid to start seeing some dividends this season and the leader of that is Coleman, who should battle for a spot on the podium in March.
