3A-3 Preview: Hagerty looks to season with team and individual goals

BY BRANT PARSONS

Kabra Wrestling Rankings are updated every week all season long for Kabra+ members.

Last season: Hagerty flexed its depth muscles and outscored Timber Creek by 51 points to win its first district IBT title since 2022.

How did Kabra do?: We picked the top correctly but were burned again by Timber Creek, who loves to prove Kabra wrong.

Notable losses (Graduation/Transfer): William Muniz, 41-10, 5th, R2, D2; Tiago Neves, 38-13, 8th, RC, DC; Ozy Aquino, 34-10, SQ, R2, DC; Juan Viera, 48-11, SQ, R3, DC; Tigran Grigoryan, 20-17, RQ, D2; Anthony DiManno, 15-22, RQ, D3; Kameron Sheeran, 14-19, RQ, D3; Angel Pluguez, 20-15, RQ, D4; Austin Maloney, 18-21, RQ, D4; Sadra Davadevlabet, 28-9, RQ-BR, D3; Ashtin Diggs, 35-19, RQ-BR, D3.

Notable returning wrestlers: Ottis Aquino, Sr., 10-8, RQ-BR, D3; Nolan Joyce, Sr., 12-10, RQ, D4; Harrison Proulx; Anthony Cornwell; TJ Thomas

What they are saying: “We have a young team this year having graduated a huge senior class last year, but we have a lot of depth and guys who are ready to step in and embrace the challenge. Even with a young team, we still go into the season with goals of staying competitive towards district and Metro titles. We also still want to be competing at region duals.”

On public expectations: “We like to fly under the radar. We lost a lot of talent last year and will be counted out a lot understandably, but I believe in our depth and coaching to remain competitive.”

On having a strong JV program: “There'll be some spots where we'll be young and a little bit inexperienced just as far as varsity experience, but they've been around, they've been able to compete. We like to host JV events all the time. It keeps these guys going and keeps them competing where they're not just sitting around and not having any kind of schedule all year. And the nice thing is being able to bring a lot of these guys last year to any event where we always bring extras to get them the experience. I know we'll be overlooked a lot and it's understandable, I know looking at the senior class we had last year, it's understandable that, we're going to be a little overlooked, but we like it that way.”

Outlook: Gama takes over the head coaching spot from Jon Cone, who stepped down after leading the Wolves for nine seasons. Gama has been an assistant with the Wolves for eight seasons.

What they are saying: “I think that there's a lot of potential there and every year there's potential, but this year, there's a lot of potential for growth. Just looking to see kids grow during the season and I think we'll be okay. We'll see how weight classes fall for our kids and if we can get people in the right weight classes. If we can do that, we got kids that can hopefully at districts perform well and regions, and get paid for all the work they've been doing in the offseason.”

On Douglas Dowda: “I mean the goal for sure is to get him on the board. Wherever that ends up falling, but that's the ultimate goal is to get him on the board as high as possible on the podium as high as possible. When I say the board, I'm referring to our state placer list in the wrestling room. I think he thinks he can do it, which is more important. and he's shows up, he's doing everything he's supposed to do and he's not a kid that you're like texting saying, ‘Hey, why are you late?’ He's not a kid that's trying to leave practice early. I think he can do it. He's doing all the right things.”

On Jimmy Godwin: “He is a returning, three-year wrestler. This will be his third year wrestling. He didn't start until the summer before 9th grade. And, he's gotten significantly better.”

Outlook: The Lions will have nine returners in the lineup and a bunch of young wrestlers ready to fill those other spots.
