2A-8 Preview: Up on the air team race should make district tournament exciting

BY BRANT PARSONS

Kabra Wrestling Rankings are updated every week all season long for Kabra+ members.

Last season: Lead by a strong senior class, Lyman won the school’s first team district title since 2013 and also won the school’s first-ever district duals title.

How did Kabra do?: We picked the champions correctly, and while we didn’t pick the order right, we did think that it would be a toss-up for second place. And it was with East River earning the honor.

Last year’s district tournament results

Last year’s region tournament results

Wrestlers to watch: Parker Miller (Edgewater), Judah Miller (Edgewater), Casper Roberts (Edgewater), Jason Perez (Kissimmee Gateway), Norris Mayo (East River).

The favorite: Kissimmee Gateway. The Panthers likely return most of their starting lineup from last season and that can give you an edge in this competitive district.

Team to watch: Lyman. Last year’s senior class is gone but the Greyhounds have been building something special and will look to fill those holes and get back in the hunt.

District duals: Saturday, January 3 at Kissimmee Gateway

District IBT: Thursday, February 19 at Lyman, 3:30 p.m.

What they are saying: “With graduating a very tough and large senior class (4 state qualifiers, 2 state placers, 7 district champions), this team is motivated to continue atop our district and to represent Lyman at the state tournament and on the podium.”

On team goals: “We're young this year, but we're moving forward still and it's going to continue with Longwood Wrestling Club thriving and just these kids working hard. I've been blessed with great parents of these kids who put all this time and effort and if I say okay this kid should go to this camp and the airplane tickets are booked, the entry fees paid, and they're on their way. We're not going to be like we were last year but I still think we can repeat as the district titles and get a guy or two to state. The program is moving in the right direction and more people are buying in.”

On team attitude: “No matter what our talent is, we want to work harder than everybody else and try to catch up to just their goals, they fall in line with them and that's what they use and that's the same template we've been using every year and it's been showing growth every year.”

Outlook: The Greyhounds are a freshman/sophomore heavy team. Despite being young, they do have experience and a majority of them have been working in the room this offseason and most have gotten over 50 off-season matches. This group is eager to continue the legacy that the graduating class helped begin at Lyman.

What they’re saying: “The upcoming 2025-26 season for Edgewater boys wrestling is a new chapter that will continue the recent growth and success of the program.”

On first-year coaching: “We are just trying to help restore the legacy and tradition of Edgewater wrestling.”

Outlook: Leisher takes over a program that has been looking for direction. Edgewater hasn’t finished above fourth in the district since 2024. Leisher and his knowledgeable coaching staff are looking to change that.
