What they are saying: “We lost a good senior crew. We had a state runner up that moved to Michigan and two other of our varsity returners quit this fall. So it's definitely going to be a different look. I think it was with five returning kids now from our varsity boys lineup. The expectation doesn't change at the end of the year though. I think we'll maybe look a little different this year. I believe our team we start in November with will be a lot different than we see in the postseason. We do have depth but, the book ends of our lineup are kind of where we're thin, and those were the weights that we lost. We have some work to do. As coaches, it's kind of up to us. I expect to kind of get to the same place. The goals stay the same. We haven't sat down with the team yet to have our team goal meeting, so I'm really curious to kind of see how they come together.”
On seniors: “There's a ton of new wrestlers, but just getting our seniors back out there and seeing some leadership is big. We have Jaden Williams and he's really having a great preseason. He's had some good results. Mac Andrews, obviously, has been a mainstay for us for the last four years. WE are looking forward to those guys specifically. Those are kind of like our big returning seniors. We have a couple other seniors that are going to fit in, on the boy side with our lineup, but those two and a good core group of juniors, we want to see leadership out of them.”
On having a younger team: “Last year, I think we had one freshman in our lineup so there wasn't really that transition stage. We're going to have a handful of freshman in there, which long term is going to be awesome, but, as coaches, we're going to be coaching to the top guys. You preach the message to the younger guys they got to, catch up and keep up and, of course, supporting them and encouraging them, but there's going to be a little bit of growing pains there and I'm sure some frustration. I'm not saying it's going to be easy, but looking forward to the challenge.”
Outlook: Even with just five wrestlers returning this season, it’s not a rebuilding year for the Wolverines, it’s more reloading. Look for them to be in the mix when the postseason comes.

What they are saying: “I feel like we've been putting in a lot of training. I have some really cool kids that love to wrestle and love to be around the sport and we're getting healthy. Honestly, we've just been really focusing in on just coming together as a team as the season starts. Our seniors last year and the year before and even the year before that, were just real tight-knit groups. This year, it kind of feels like we're still trying to find out our identity and kind of who we are.”
On getting the team to bond: “We've been making time for, it's not just all wrestling on the mat. Now it's about developing the relationships and getting to know each other and taking the time to tell each other's stories. This is the first year some of the kids are starting to eat lunch with me. We are just making space where we can really bond, because it's just the way it is now.”
On Chris Schnobrick and Jake Margolis: “I think it starts with our one-two punch at lightweight. They're leading from the front, and they do everything they have to do, whether it's nutrition or sleeping right, or focusing. They never miss workouts, they’re first in, last out, and all the cliches. They're really just good people to be around. They're fun guys and they have a lot of passion for what they're doing. They're fun to be around. They're really throwback good kids, good wrestlers. Everything that the sport wants, you have in those two.”
Outlook: The Lions return the most wrestlers in the district from last year’s postseason and could take home their first district title since 2021.

New wrestlers: Matthew Vota, Sr. (Transfer from Spanish River)
What they are saying: “Five of our wrestlers were very active in the offseason. This included camps, freestyle tournaments and practicing three days a week at clubs such as Mocco, Olympic Heights or others organizations. Also at JT Taylor’s YIC Club and JT’s support of our team as a part-time coach, his clinics and involvement at our annual home tournament has made a difference in the improvement of our team and how well our tournament ran last year. His son is our 138 pound wrestler and a last year state qualifier in 3A.”
On this group: “Our strengths include strong camaraderie, the kids like hanging out with each other on and off season. Because of that, team culture is growing and more kids are interested in participating in the offseason tournaments, camps, and having active involvement in various wrestling clubs.”
Outlook: The goal this year for the Bobcats is to get at least five wrestlers to the Silver Spurs Arena in March. Boca Raton will also look to improve its finish in both the district and region IBT competitions.

Notable returning wrestlers: Jad Urribarri, Jr., 15-7, RQ, D2; Maickol Mena, Jr., 23-4; Mathew Alvarez; Cael Jean-Baptiste; Steven Alexis.
New wrestlers: Heiner Martinez
What they are saying: “With Jad and Maickol, I expect them to take a big leap. They're training together and every day drilling together. Jad had a really good off season. He went to the national duals and went to Fargo. So they had a really good offseason and they're not very vocal leaders but just the work ethic, all the other kids really look up to them so they're role models. The kids definitely look up to them and kind of follow their lead.”
On Jad's disappointment from missing weight at regions: "I think he was 0.1 over on that second day. He was really bummed about it, but he has a quick turnaround on that kind of stuff, mistakes. He just accepts it, sees what he could do better and that really motivated him for not only the offseason but this season as well. But yeah, he went into the offseason last year really motivated because of what happened."
More on Maickol: "He's very very motivated. He's very excited for the season. In his mind, he's like, 'If I don't win every match, it's like a disappointment.' He wants to do well. I'm excited to watch him through his growth and just watching him in the room every day."
Outlook: Miranda’s third season in charge shows a program still working on building depth after a couple ignored seasons, but they’re strong at the top with Urribari and Mena looking to make some noise this year.
