2A-16 Preview: Somerset chasing three-peat

BY BRANT PARSONS

Kabra Wrestling Rankings are updated every week all season long for Kabra+ members.

Last season: Somerset won the district title in their first year in Class 2A and then put on an epic performance on Saturday night at Silver Spurs Arena to win the Class 2A state team IBT title.

How did Kabra do?: We correctly picked the state champion Panthers to win their district title and had them ranked first in Class 2A entering the season and while we missed on picking Miramar to finish second, they were our team to watch.

What they are saying: “We have some good studs still. We have the three seniors, they're going to do their part. My junior class has been with me for seven years after that. I also have a group of sixth and seventh graders right now and incoming sixth graders that are just little hammers. It's some of youth and a couple of old guys it's so refreshing and then you got kids just popping in and catching stuff in between in the middle but we're just solid from top to bottom. Everything is falling into place, it's like we're a solid lineup for almost every weight class and I feel like we can bring numbers again and that's what's won for us. We've had 13 kids the last two years at the state tournament. That's truthfully something we could do again.”

On getting help coaching in the room: “I'm a system person. I'm very regimented. Everything is the same. We improve on things, but everything is the same. So when I bring back people that learn that and learn nothing else from anyone else, it's being implemented. I've been doing this so long. It's hard to have that energy all the time. It's very hard to be all over everything. Now I've got some young drill sergeants back, that do things my way and so that's allowed me to be a better coach. That has been my breath of fresh air this year.”

Outlook: Somerset has pulled off two straight Saturday nights of excitement in Kissimmee to win team titles, showing you can never count them out and they shouldn’t be counted out for a third-team title this year.

New wrestlers: Caleb Boigris, 7th; Lucas Cespedes, 8th

What they are saying: “We are a team that is eager to get back on the mats after what was a disappointing finish to last season. We have a group of seniors that we have very high expectations for expecting multiple state qualifiers from the group, all having the ability to podium. The first group of sixth graders we coached are now ninth graders and primed to play a huge role on our team after getting a lot of varsity experience last year having six consistently in our lineup.”

On program depth: “Since I've been here this is going to be the largest and most competitive group we've had top to bottom. We will have full varsity, JV, and middle school teams and we expect a big impact on our wrestling room.”

On who to watch: “When healthy, Jose Romano should be able to compete for a state championship. Rafael Scott and Cesar Aguado are two guys we expect to fight for a spot on the podium at states. Samuel Mazman and Christian Jurado are two wrestlers we expect to be able to qualify for states. Gus Padron, Sebastian Jurado, and Luis Souto are guys we expect to be blood round guys competing for a chance to qualify.

Outlook: Last season left a bad taste in the mouth for the Wolverines and they’re going to look the right the ship.

New wrestler: Marley Judge

What they are saying: “We have a lot of guys that I guess you could say have been playing second fiddle and now it's their turn. That last class, they had to go through it too. We're going to take our bumps this year. We're going to get smacked around. But we'll be there by regionals, by state. We'll be there. The way we work, it always takes us just a little bit longer.

On senior legacy: In the last three years, and not to toot our horn, but the duals that we've lost have been only to top programs. I think out of that group, I only had four four-year wrestlers. All our guys were young and they were hungry. They worked hard. And the great thing is you're going forward and you have all these young guys now, but the work ethic hasn't changed. The culture hasn't changed."

On not having feeder programs: "I don't have that privilege of having kids just walk into that room ready. I'm spending a month 'All right, this is a stance. this is your a takedown, this is how you pin a guy.' We got to teach them the basics, and then we just got to from there, we make no excuses. I tell them if you want to win, you're going to face guys who have been wrestling since kindergarten. So, where we lack technique, we got to make up with athleticism, speed, strength, all that stuff."

On the tough region: We finished third last year behind Jensen Beach and Somerset of course, but our guys are always ready for the test. I guess sometimes that it helps a lot too that we don't have, those wrestlers that been on the mat forever because they don't get caught up in the moment, they just wrestle the guy in front of them. We have our lighter guys, but it's always one of these football players that I have that will put on a hell of a performance at regionals and punch their ticket at state. It happens every year and not just on our team. They're like, 'Hey, this kid's a stud. Who's this guy?' I just pulled him off the football field.”

Outlook: That Patriots kept on performing well last year, finishing third in the hardened 2A-4 region race. Last year’s senior class was a good one, and this team might take part of the year to find replacements in the lineup, but don’t expect a dropoff in the effort and potential.

Felix Varela Vipers

Coach: Eric Hughes (3rd year at school/46.5th overall)

Assistant coach: Nicholas Martinez

24-25 dual record: 15-10

Recent district results: 2025:5; 2024:4; 2015:8-3A16;2014: 7-3A16; 2013:5-3A16; 2012:4-3A16

Notable losses (Graduation/Transfer): Jordan Pineda, 38-7, 5th, RC, DC; Juniet Ozuna, 23-14, RQ, D4; Matthew Soto, 6-4, RQ, D4.

Notable returning wrestlers: Rubier Oliva, Sr., 30-12, SQ, R2, D2; Joshua Lescano, Sr., 16-12, RQ, D3; Keen Davis, Jr., 16-10, RQ, D4; Mark Sweeney, So., 16-4, D5; Terrell Jones, Sr., 20-11, D6; Victor Cerna; Ralph Pariente.

New wrestlers: Joel Corredor; Samual Pavon; Alexander Gonzalez

What they are saying: “We have camaraderie and I got some kids who won't quit. I put my kids into tough meets (during the season) so by the time we come to 2A, we'll be prepared and I think once they wrestle us, they’ll see we're not going to lay down. And I can say that because I tell them do not quit on yourself and believe in yourself.”

On a wrestler to watch: “We got Rubel Olivia who's ranked at 190. He’s got his head on right, and last year I think he kind of got in the lights a little bit when he got to the state stage and we look for him to use that experience this season. I thought he should have placed in the top six or seven.”

On keeping coaching fun after so many years in the corner: “You have kids who enjoy how you teach, plus you got help that can cause you to keep pushing. That way you don't try to take things on yourself and you get to allow other people to be a part of something. I feel that one of the most important things that parents also come give support to help and also to let the kids see them which will inspire the kid and our job will be made a lot easier and just still having a passion for it. Every year the kids are different and the kids are funny and I still have the love for coaching.”

Outlook: The Vipers’ room is led by Oliva and other veteran leaders as the room continues to grow for the third season back after the school abandoned wrestling in 2015. Hughes is excited by having 30-35 kids in the room and a school administration that supports the goals in hand.
