1A-1 Preview: North Bay Haven looking to see plan come to fruition
Kabra Wrestling Rankings are updated every week all season long for Kabra+ members.
Last season: Bay won a heated team battle in 1A-1, outscored runners-up South Walton by 9 points and third place finisher North Bay Haven by 11.
How did Kabra do?: We missed this one, we thought North Bay Haven would repeat as district champions despite having some holes to fill and our prediction came up short. Our team to watch came in fifth place, three spots lower than its finish a season before.

North Bay Haven Buccaneers (#7 IBT, #9 Duals)

Last state champion: David Mercado, 2023 (220)
Notable losses (Graduation/Transfer): Preston Neufeld, 61-7, 2nd, RC, DC.
Notable returning wrestlers: Koa DeLoach, Sr., 64-6, 3rd, RC, DC; Jack Mulnix, Jr., 51-6, 6th, RC, DC; Bear Siegal, Sr., 61-11, 6th, RC, DC; Will Lundgren, Sr., 39-16, RQ-BR, DC; Kaden Davis, Jr., 29-22, RQ, D2; Brady McAlister, Fr., 18-24, RQ, D3; Peyton Saluto Jr., Jr., 21-22, RQ, D4; Nathan Mercado, Sr.; Zander Stillgess, Sr.; JP Falgout, So.; Jackson Clark, So.; Peyton Saluto, Jr.
New wrestlers: Alex Vasquez-Young, Jr., 44-20, RQ, D4 (Transfer from Mosley); AJ Ramey, Jr., 24-24, RQ, D2 (Transfer from Bay)
What they are saying: “This is our proof of concept year. When we first started laying the foundation, we had four eighth graders, a slew of seventh graders, and some sixth graders starting for us that we knew would be the core of a big push for some team titles; this will likely be the first year we don't have a middle schooler in the starting lineup. Injuries kept us from making more of a statement last year. If this team is healthy and we get these young men in the right weights, then I don't think there is a team we can't scrap with.“
On Koa DeLoach: “He was Greco Fargo All-American this year and I think that seeing more of those national level tournaments has built his confidence in a different way. He's still a kid that does a good job of not really paying attention to who anybody else is. If you watch any of his recent clips, there's a different level of confidence in what he's doing. Last yearm he was still very great on his feetm but sometimes I felt there was some hesitation against kids that I think he could have opened up against. Confidence has been a big piece for him. It's really only his second year in the states competing and he mostly focused on freestyle in Guam. He’s going into that second year with a little more confidence, a little more understanding.”
On how close this team is: “I think it's been huge. I think when you look at our kids that have had to miss that year hurt. I think being as close as they are with the other kids, they're able to stay connected to the team even if they weren't competing. You have kids that are going to be a little more willing to kind of go up or down a weight in order to fit for the team and not just kind of an individual aspect of it. They're a fun tough group. We always have somebody willing to step in and they just push each other to get better because they love each other. But again, knowing each other that long, they're also incredibly competitive with each other.”
Outlook: The Buccaneers have already experienced success with this program, but this is the year that it’s all been building for from their master plan to develop this program.

South Walton Seahawks
Coach: Travis Laxton (8th at school/9th overall)
Assistant coaches: Dean Salvaggio, Shane Lane
24-25 dual record: 10-10
Recent district results: 2025:2; 2024:5; 2023:4; 2022:1; 2021:1; 2020:2; 2019:4; 2018:2; 2017:7; 2016:7; 2015:3; 2014:5; 2013:4; 2012:4
Last state champion: Max Brewster, 2022 (120)
Notable losses (Graduation/Transfer): Gibson Moore, 35-3, 2nd, RC, DC; Kaden Shaw, 22-13, RQ-BR, D2.
Notable returning wrestlers: John Gibbs, So., 27-20, RQ-BR, D3; Ben Sundstrom, Jr., 20-21, RQ, DC; Ethan Burgess, So., 13-24, RQ, D2; Jose Mirafuentes, So., 8-18, RQ, D3; Sam Madden, Sr., 13-19, RQ, D3; Sebastian Dewitz, So., 12-23, RQ, D3; Tommy Nguyen, So., 8-27, RQ, D4; Noah Withers, Sr., 23-23, RQ, D4; Darnell Johnson, Sr., 15-14, D5; Hieu Roberts, Jr., 20-16.
What they are saying: “The goal is always a district title. We look good enough to where we're expecting to place high in the region and hopefully compete for a couple more state titles and state medals this year individually. It looks like as far as the duals go, we may be right up there in the dual finals with those guys from last year.”
On team chemistry: “It makes a world of difference when you have kids that are being selfless and not selfish. You have those kids that are only there to do what they can do, but what we've been preaching and what we've been really working towards is having a seamless family unit, where these kids all get along. They're always hanging out together. They're doing team building exercises, they're encouraging each other.”
On the growth of the program: “What I'm most excited about is our roster size. We have 44 kids in our room and we haven't even gotten our football kids yet. It's just blown up around here, which is not typical for this area in North Florida.”
Outlook: The Seahawks lost a state finalist to graduation but brings back most of the team from last year’s team that improved to second in the district. Roberts is a wrestler to watch as he has been stuck behind Moore but already has solid finishes in tough in-season tournaments in his arsenal.
