G1A-5 Preview: Orlando Freedom loads up to make chase at third team title
"I honestly think people are underestimating the group a little bit. I think people are saying, 'Oh, Freedom lost a lot of big hitters' but I think there's a lot of girls eager for their opportunity,” Orlando Freedom coach David Bush said. “There's some girls that were in the mix, placed at some tournaments last year, but weren't necessarily starters that will get to be starters this year. I think the guys and girls teams are probably pretty similar for us this year where you have a group of people that have been working hard and they get their opportunity and you know they really haven't maybe had that prime spotlight opportunity the last you know two or three years but they're going to get this year. I think these kids are capable of doing that. They just haven't had that pressure on them to do that."
Kabra Wrestling Rankings are updated every week all season long for Kabra+ members.

What they’re saying: “We lost a lot of great seniors on the boys and girls team who were very seasoned wrestlers; however, this year it is the next person up mentality. We have a lot of wrestlers who have been waiting for their chance to fill those spots and we believe they are ready.”
On winning state title with team effort: "I've always been told big tournaments are won in the wrestle backs. Because that really shows a lot of character about your team and who you have in how they respond after that loss where they you know they were hoping to win and they've got to come back for the team and battle through. I think that was showing last year to our younger girls especially that it's not a state title or bust, everybody has aspirations to be the finals or win a state championship but when things don't go our way I think what people notice the most and college coaches and people watching is how you respond after those. Do you go and lose the next match and not look yourself or do you battle back? I think some of our best matches were then and I think the way we responded last year with some of those girls going out and you know getting pins and tech falls on the back side of the bracket against really tough people showed the effort and how they felt about their team and their teammates and stepping up because they knew you know you have your goal to get a state title but we also have a goal as a team here to get a state title."
Some to watch: "Josie Reeves has been working really hard. I'm really excited, to see how she does this year. She has big goals and a great work ethic. Aimar Donastorg, Mekialla Mauvais, I think our two heavy hitters up top. They push each other, they work hard, they're practice partners and I think those two will push each other and support each other and have each other ready for those big moments in the upper weights.
Outlook: Last year the Patriots became the first school to win two girls state team titles and they’re good enough to make it three this season.

What they’re saying: “The girls return almost their entire lineup and are equally as offensive and have a ton of mat experience.”
On program: "I got here 2021 when wrestling first was sanctioned for girls and I was asked by the principal if we could get seven to 10 girls to start a team and I was like yeah easy I'll make it happen. And we ended up with seven that year and one went to states. And then those girls came back and recruited more of their friends and we went from seven to 17 then to 25 and we haven't been below 25 since with girls. We're at a place now where we're cutting kids for the wrestling program which was unheard of."
Outlook: The program is deep with experience as most of the lineup is back.

What they’re saying: “We have solid technique and many of our girls are also competing in weightlifting so we should bring physical strength to the mat.”
On being stronger: "Everyone's just been hitting the weight room super hard and we're going to see a lot of improvement from that, especially on our girls team. We struggled a lot with getting out-strengthened by other teams and all of them have been hit in the weight room pretty hard. We're also adding a bunch of new girls from our weightlifting program in the school so they're going to be competing in weightlifting and wrestling at the same time and that's going to help us a lot as well."
Outlook: Two region qualifiers return to lead the Cougars.

What they’re saying: "Right now we've got a handful of girls that are training with us, but they're all brand new. We've got a couple in our youth program, but with the high school group, our goal is to get 10 girls this year. We'll see what happens there, but we've got a handful that have been in training with our preseason, lifting and mat time and all that stuff. We're going to keep recruiting and getting girls in here and trying to grow that program and, it's make sure that they're aware of the opportunity and we're in a unique spot where we're in our area."
