1A-4 Preview: After snapping district title drought, Episcopal will look to make it two

BY BRANT PARSONS

Kabra Wrestling Rankings are updated every week all season long for Kabra+ members.

Last season: Episcopal’s seven seniors led their team to a 43.5 point win in the district.

How did Kabra do?: We correctly picked the champ and runner-up to be at the top of 1A-4.

Last year’s district tournament results

Last year’s region tournament results

The favorite: Episcopal. It’s a younger group than last year, but the talent is still there to repeat.

Team to watch: Bishop Kenny. This team will have a lot of young faces in the lineup.

District IBT: Thursday, February 19 at St. Johns Country Day, 10 a.m.

Last state champion: Billy Kartsonis, 2009 (189)

Notable losses (Graduation/Transfer): Christian McGarity, 61-7, 5th, R3, DC; Maddox Davidson, 30-13, RQ, D2; Mark Rinaman, 22-17, RQ, D3; Turner Glenn, 32-5, RQ, DC.

Notable returning wrestlers: Mikah Ikeda, Jr., 55-13, 7th, R2, DC; Levi Ritter, So., 22-10, RQ-BR, DC; Worth Athey, Jr., 30-11, RQ, D3; Thomas Riley, 8th, 9-7, RQ, D4; Logan Henson, Sr., 8-11, RQ, D4; Shay Eberle, Sr., 21-21, RQ, D4.

New wrestlers: Milo Phillips; Robbie Gillis; Lucca Martinez; Quin Parks.

What they are saying: “We lost a great group of seniors that lead from the front. Now the younger kids need to setup and lead this team. We have a great group of kids that are willing to put in the work during the season and off-season.”

Fun fact: Last year’s district title for Episcopal was the first for the school since 2009.

Outlook: With only two seniors in the lineup this season, the Eagles will be young, but under the leadership of Ikeda, the team’s work ethic will have them competing for a back-to-back district title.

New wrestler: Ralph Cuartero, Fr. (Transfer from St. Johns Country Day)

What they are saying: “This year’s team will be a bunch of new faces but not new wrestlers. We have for the first time in my 16-year coaching career, five new kids that are entering the BK wrestling program with experience on the wrestling mat. Personally, I am excited to get the chance to work with these young individuals. What I have seen so far in club is exciting.”

On culture: “There is a culture in the wrestling program of Bishop Kenny that has remained in place through successful seasons and not so successful seasons. It is accountability, honesty, and compassion. It is easy when we are winning, harder when we are not, but the parents, the administration, and the coaching staff are all committed to maintaining this.”

On Dylan Lunsford: “The kid is on a mission. Tough, intelligent, and a good kid. He worked hard all summer rehabbing his injury and wrestling. He will make some noise this season. I am so inspired by him that I will put anything I can to help him achieve his goals.”

Outlook: Lunsford will lead the way as he looks for a podium finish.

Hill is back healthy and Ortez battled hard in the region semifinals last year against the eventual state finalist.
