1A-11 Preview: New faces looking to carry on Lemon Bay title tradition

Last season: Lemon Bay continued its domination of the district, winning its fifth straight 1A-11 title and 10th title in a row. Lakewood finished second in the district duals competition.
How did Kabra do?: Picking Lemon Bay wasn’t exactly going out on a limb, but a correct pick is a correct pick. Cardinal Mooney’s .5 point edge over Bayshore for second place proved us slightly wrong too.

The favorite: Lemon Bay. The Manta Rays graduated almost 50% of their district points from a season ago but the cupboard is not bare, they’ll just need some young guys step into their new roles well.
Team to watch: Cardinal Mooney. Last season’s district runner-up may have the deepest experienced roster coming back.

What they’re saying: “With three state placers and five state qualifiers in the line up, we have some strong leaders. We also have a lot of regional qualifiers from last year that are hungry to make it to the state tournament this season.”
On being at Lemon Bay: "We're growing the program a little bit more every year. My dad started this program 48 years ago I guess and I know that he asked me at one point when I was done coaching college and doing all my wrestling at Oklahoma State and doing all my traveling and coaching around the world that if I retired and I ever had a chance to take the helm at Lemon Bay, he wanted me to do that."
On their approach: "I think when you get your hands on these kids and kind of let them feel what it's like to hand fight, how to drill, how to wrestle and compete, it becomes sort of contagious. You're making individual kids better, but then those individual kids are making other kids in their group better. I think that iron sharpens iron and we try to go to the tougher competitions where kids that were state placers didn't even place at those tournaments and we were always putting three or four kids in the medal matches so I think that you push yourself in the room and then you go out there and you push yourself in tournaments and we think we have a pretty balanced schedule to where we can get good competition to continue to make our kids better."
Outlook: The Manta Rays had a big class graduate after last season but they return a team filled with experience and hungry athletes. They’re in a really tough region, but don’t count this group out.”

What they’re saying: “I would say the key to the growth of this program would not only be the commitment of the wrestlers but also the support from the parents and the other coaches and the community. There 12 that are coming back from last year and we have at least 20 newcomers this year. And then on the girl side, I also have four or five newcomers. We are going to have between 30 and 40 wrestlers for this program compared to only the 17 or 18 at most that I had last year.”
On interest in the school: I saw a huge interest in wrestling from this incoming class because when we did a new student orientation, almost every single student that came to the athletics table was asking about wrestling. I think it is something that was definitely promoted at the prep school and it's something that there's other kids that have other friends they grew up with that wrestle at some other schools and I think it's just something that once they got here, they wanted to do it and jumped."
On Westin Cattin: "My goal for him this year is to get to Silver Spurs Arena. I want him to continue representing SMA at the state tournament because I had my heavyweight make it there last year. I also would like to see him guide other kids and try to get them to the state tournament as well. That way, we can get at least a group of us competing in the arena."
Outlook: This is a young team with a big group of returning sophomores.
