1A-14 Preview: Cardinal Gibbons queued up for first district title since 2024

Last season: Eventually state champion Mater Lakes edged Cardinal Gibbons by 10.5 points in the IBT race and beat the Chiefs twice in the state duals playoffs. Gibbons made noise in the state tournament too with Michael Mocco finishing his historic career and younger brother Peter Mocco joining him at the top of the podium.
How did Kabra do?: We actually did okay here, picking the top two spots and not being more than one spot off on the rest of the district.

What they’re saying: “We have a team where from 113 all the way up to 215, we're solid with guys that have so much experience and I think it's going to be a great season. It's just going to be super exciting. The schedule we're going to travel to Iron Man and we're going to other tournaments where we can still push ourselves. We want to see all the hard work pay off and I don't have to reinvent the wheel. They already bought into the system. They know how the system works and it's less stress on them too because they've been there before and really know what it takes and it's not a mystery.
On mentally ready: "As coaches, you got to remind them that just because you're supposed to win doesn't mean you're supposed to train like you're supposed to win. You've got to train like you're not the number two guy or number three guy. You still have to put the work in to stay on top because if you get complacent and you don't push yourself, then that's when you get guys getting upset by guys that shouldn't get upset at state tournament or regional. So just keep reminding them daily that you still have to put as much work in as you put the years before to keep upping your level and once you start thinking you've learned all you can learn, that's when you start getting worse. Keep focusing on perfecting your craft, getting better, stronger mentally and physically."
On Michael Mocco: "Our guys got to watch him become on of the best guys in the nation and they saw the work he put in on and off the mat, going to extra practices, extra lifts, going to big tournaments and pushing himself. They've seen the work he put in and they're using it as a blueprint and a stepping stone for them. If he can do it, I can do it."

What they’re saying: "This is the first season we started a club at the beginning of the school year and we've been averaging 40 to 45 kids in the club and there's probably 25 to 30 brand new kids that have no experience whatsoever. That's exciting and we do have a lot of kids coming back."
On some of the returners: "We have Christopher Carbajal coming back. He was a county runner up last year. I believe he took second in districts last year. Then we have Blake Eden coming back. It's his third season with us. We have Jonathan McKenzie coming back. We have Andrew Ridge coming back. A lot of our guys are returning. This is third season for a lot of them. All summer they've been training hard in the club. I think we're going to have a really good season."
On the effort: "I think what I have to do is just make sure that everybody's on the same page that anybody can fall at any given time. And I come up with examples of some wrestlers that chose to compete to be a champion in a weight class and then they don't even place and stuff like that. It's just getting them to believe in themselves and seeing that the practices that we're doing everybody else is doing. The only thing that we have to do differently is practice when we're not supposed to be at practice. Waking up early and running. What's your diet looking like? What are you doing in school? Are you being a good student? Are you going to be a good brother or sister or a good son or daughter? I try to instill that in their minds that all of that ties together. As long as we're doing everything that we can do to become better, everything else will take care of itself."
