Oviedo comes up big at the finish | Freedom, South Dade, Lincoln Park, Bell Creek are champions
February 13, 2026
BY BRANT PARSONS — Oviedo needed two wins to close out the G1A-4 girls district on Thursday to win the team title. Shyann Tate and Haley Mitchell were up to the challenge.
Due to the pacing of the tournament, Tate actually came up first for the Lions in the 235-pound final. The senior bounced back from giving up an early takedown and secured the win and bonus points by pinning her opponent in the first period.
Mitchell then followed in the third place match at 190 pounds. A win would clinch the team title for the Lions and she came through, winning by a pin in the third period and giving Oviedo its first ever girls team district title. The Lions outscored Winter Springs three points for the win with Lake Mary in third place, 8.5 points behind.
“Shyann did a great job with effort after falling from neutral then getting back to her base, a reversal, then pinned. Without that, we come in second,” Oviedo coach Zachary Waters said. “With Hailey’s match being our last and knowing that Winter Springs had their heavyweight left that was likely to win, I told Hailey no pressure, but a win locks us in for first. She fought hard and came through when it was needed. The girls were in her ear cheering her on while she wrestled, she knew what was on the line, and she delivered.”
Oviedo’s win was a pure team effort with just two wrestlers winning district titles, Tate and Claudia La Costa Perez (125). The Lions advanced seven wrestlers automatically to next week’s region and they got points from 10 of their 11 wrestlers.

“I told the girls over chips and salsa after that exact thing how they all contributed, and everyone should feel good about that,” Waters said. “The thing that makes them special is most are friends on and off the mat, but even if they aren’t great friends, they still will cheer each other on during a match, and they will always take time out during practice to help each other with drill and improving technique. No one ignores someone doing something wrong, or someone that can do something better.”
