BY BRANT PARSONS — St. Johns Country Day’s Bryce Fiore and Orlando Freedom’s Mekialla Mauvais were your choices for the Reader’s Choice Wrestlers of the Week for Week 3.

Fiore became the first-ever seventh grader to win an individual title at the Knockout Christmas Classic. The 113-pounder won the title in style, winning the final by a score of 14-12.

“What he showed in winning the Knockout Christmas Classic as a seventh grader was maturity, toughness, and technical dominance far beyond his years,” St. Johns Country Day coach Hunter Hill said. “He's always had that special edge. On top of it all, he's balancing a rigorous academic load with college prep courses at St. Johns Country Day School, which speaks volumes about his discipline and long-term focus. Bryce is the real deal, and he's only getting started.”

On the girls side, Mauvais was matched up again with South Dade’s Kenzie Barrett in the 235-pound final, the second #1-#2 meeting for the two this season.

With Barrett leading 4-0 in the second period, Mauvais turned a takedown into a pinfall to improve to 2-0 between the two wrestlers this season. The Orlando Freedom junior won a similar battle between the two at the Let Freedom Ring tournament in Week 1.

“She’s been kinda hiding behind a state champion for a few years here and couldn’t get her spot,” Orlando Freedom coach Dave Bush said after the first win. “She’s more fit for heavyweight, she likes heavyweight better and she made the cut last year to 190 to get to the state tournament and get that experience and with this win, we got to see where she will be as far as contending this year.”
