Bibla, Gonzalez lead eight All-Americans for Florida at Fargo | All Florida results
BY BRANT PARSONS —Kendall Bibla and Abigail Gonzalez earned third-place finishes at the U.S. Marine Corps Junior Nationals in Fargo, North Dakota on Sunday.
Flagler Palm Coast state champion Bibla left her mark at the Fargodome, winning five matches against nationally-ranked opponents to finish third in the 170-pound weight class in the junior division.
Bibla, who is headed to Lindsey Wilson to wrestle, is ranked No. 30 in the country and defeated four ranked-opponents with two of the wins coming over Top 10 wrestlers. In the third place match, Bibla topped No. 6 Makayla Vasser 18-12.
Gonzalez finished in third place in the 16U 120-pound division. The No. 13 ranked wrestler in the country bounced back after a one-point loss in the quarterfinals to win her final four matches. Included in her wins was a victory over the No. 19 wrestler in the U.S.
In her third place match, Gonzalez edged Wyoming’s Daelin Cody 6-5 to win the consolation side of the bracket.
Ailee Briggs, Kendal Haynie, Makayla Ocean, TorRina Rushing, Kiera Partello and Mariah Mills also finished on the podium to earn All-American status for Team Florida.
Lemon Bay’s two-time Florida state champion Ailee Briggs finished in fourth place in the junior 140-pound weight class. The rising senior reached the semifinals before falling to the top-seed. Briggs then beat the No. 3 wrestler in the country to reach the third-place match.
Kendal Haynie avenged a loss to reach the third-place match before finishing fourth in the 16U 115-pound weight class. After losing 6-3 to the fifth-seed in the round of 16, Haynie won five straight matches, including a 5-4 win over Lucia Ranieri.
Archbishop McCarthy’s Makayla Ocean finished in fourth place in the 16U 207-pound weight class. After losing her first match to the second-seed, Ocean rallied, defeating three top-six seeds on her way to the third-place match.
Mosley’s TorRina Rushing started her tournament with a disappointing loss and then reeled off eight straight wins in the consolation bracket to earn All-American honors. The rising junior finished in sixth place in the junior division at 170 pounds.
Also tearing up the backside was Kiera Partello. The rising senior at Barron Collier lost her first match and then rallied to win seven straight matches to finish on the podium as a junior All-American at105 pounds.
Flagler Palm Coast graduate Mariah Mills finished in seventh-place at 110 pounds in the junior division. The West Liberty wrestler’s only losses were to the top and third-seeded wrestlers, both of whom are ranked sixth in the country in their weight class.
