National Champion Mocco leads Team Florida Greco-Roman team

BY BRANT PARSONS — Peter Mocco dominated the 16U Greco-Roman 190-pound weight class at the U.S. Marine Corps Junior Nationals in Fargo, N.D.
The rising Cardinal Gibbons sophomore allowed just three points to be scored while rolling through his six opponents on his way to the top of the podium.
In the final, Mocco faced the second seeded William Etu. The top-seeded Mocco went back-and-forth with the New Jersey wrestler, leading 6-3 after the first period.
Halfway through the second, Mocco put the match away after successfully completed a grand amplitude throw, scoring five points and sending him toward a 12-3 national title win.
Mocco was one of five All-Americans for Team Florida in Greco-Roman wrestling. Kyle Gallo also finished on the podium in the 16U division with Myron Mendez, RJ Phelan, and Koa DeLoach earning honors in the junior division.
Junior All-Americans
Myron Mendez (Third at 215 pounds): After the unseeded Mendez lost in the second round to the No. 7seed, the SW Miami graduate rolled out nine consecutive wins to take the consolation side of the bracket. On the way, Mendez defeated three top 5 seeds, including a come-from-behind-win over top-seeded and double All American Aiden Cooley 7-5 in the third place match.
RJ Phelan (Sixth at 106): The returning Florida state champion from Lake Gibson roared out of the gate, winning his first three matches to reach the semi-finals and secure his spot on the podium.
Koa DeLoach (Seventh at 113): North Bay Haven’s rising senior lost his first match in the bracket and then rallied on the consolation side, winning seven consecutive matches to reach the podium and following his second loss in the tournament, bounced back to beat Ohio’s Braydon Studer by a technical fall in his seventh-place match.
16U All-American
Kyle Gallo (Eighth at 175): Gallo, a junior this coming season at Zephyrhills Christian, completed his double All-American status with a podium position in Greco-Roman. Gallo won five of his first six matches to secure the double status.
